Services for Children with Separated Parents

At Foundation Psychology our primary focus is the support and wellbeing of the families and children we see, and we seek to provide a impartial and safe space for both children and those caring for them.

In many circumstances we commence therapy with a parent session, without the child present, to assess the situation. In this session we will establish how we can help your child, understand the family situation, and determine if we are the most appropriate service for the family and child.

In some situations, we may recommend other services that are more appropriate for your family and children.

When parents separate or divorce, family members often have different needs and perspectives. Each parent may have different views about the situation, their own fears about the future, and face additional life pressures. Supporting children in these situations can be challenging.

When engaging with us, please be mindful of the following:

  • Generally we require the consent of both parents or guardians before commencing sessions with a child.
  • We offer feedback and recommendations to you about how your child is progressing and how best to support them.
  • We may offer individual parenting sessions to either parent. These sessions will sometimes be booked separately to the child’s therapy sessions and will be charged to the parent who attends unless otherwise arranged
  • It is our expectation that separated parents work together, respectfully, cooperatively and communicate effectively, to support the child’s therapeutic journey.
  • We will not take one parent’s side over another.
  • We will not influence your child to take the side of one parent over another.
  • We will not make recommendations about care or custody arrangements.
  • We will not share information provided to us by one parent to another parent without consent.

We look forward to meeting with you and your family.
