Dr Rebecca Kam

BCom, BA (Hons), DPsych (Clinical Doctorate), MAPS

As a clinical psychologist, I work with children (age 12 and up), adolescents and adults to learn evidence-based strategies that will empower them to manage internal and external stressors and challenges. This may include significant life transitions, anxiety, depression, stress, grief, psychosis, low self-esteem and social difficulties.

I strive to be warm, engaging (and fun particularly for young people) and growth provoking in my therapeutic approach. Most importantly I focus on building a safe, respectful and non-judgemental therapeutic space fundamental to any personal discovery, growth and change. In addition to provision of diagnostic assessments, my therapeutic approaches include evidence-based treatments such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Mindfulness and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT).

My services are tailored to individual needs, rather than being symptom-focused, focusing on connecting with each person’s uniqueness particularly their cultural and spiritual perspectives. I believe people are resilient and with the right support, each person can create meaning and positive change to live a fulfilling life according to their values in spite of life’s challenges.

I hold a graduate Degree with Honours in Psychology (The University of Melbourne) and a postgraduate Doctor of Clinical Psychology (La Trobe University). I have experience across medical and psychiatric inpatient and outpatient settings in the public system, in areas of adult mental health and health psychology. At present, I also work in a public specialist youth mental health service.
